Final Year Project 1 Week 11

For Week 11, start to do  the project proposal with chapter 1 to summit before week 14.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Energy is an important asset for civilization and economical development .The world today are too depending on the fossil fuels in order to use it to operate power plant, train and automobile that will resulting to unfriendly environmental gas and created greenhouse effect to the earth. Greenhouse effect is a process by which thermal radiation from a planetary surface is absorbed by atmospheric greenhouse gases, and is re-radiated in all directions. To reduce of carbon dioxide emission, the renewable energy is considered as proper alternative energy. This is the main reason renewable energy very is very important to the environment and economical for civilization. Renewable energy is originally from natural processes that are replenished constantly. There are various forms directly from the sun, or from heat generated deep within the earth. In addition in electricity and heat generated from solar, wind, ocean, hydropower, biomass, geothermal resources, and bio fuels and hydrogen from renewable resources. As known, energy can neither be created nor destroyed by itself only can be change from one kind of energy to another. Since energy only can transform, so there only need to transform energy from natural source into other energy.
Energy harvesting or also known as power harvesting is the process by which energy is derived from external sources solar power, thermal energy, wind energy, salinity gradients and kinetic energy captured. Energy harvesters provide a very small amount of power enough for low-energy device. While the energy source for energy harvesters is present as ambient background and is free.
This electrical generator using kinetic energy harvesting that captures from passing cars is method to generate electricity for basic road utilities such as street lighting and sign road by harnessing the waste of energy that produced by a vehicles on the traffic  road. It converts kinetic energy into electrical energy. The electricity is generated by electric generator when the tyres of a vehicle roll over the ramp. The main rationale of this method is to generate clean and environmentally friendly by harnessing the waste of energy that are produced by vehicles on the traffic road

2.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT
Nowadays, the consumption of fossil fuels without control had caused unfriendly environmental gas and created greenhouse effect to the earth. In addition, the consumption fossil of fuels every day will create the run out of oil source. The generating electricity from renewable energy rather than fossil fuels offers significant public health benefits and other than that might be non-renewable energy has reached its peak already and will stay very expensive. This is a reason why renewable energy very is very important. This project able to become new alternative energy for creates clean energy and friendly environmental of electricity
This Electro Kinetic Road Ramp is a green energy method is to generate electricity without unfriendly environmental gas. In term of safety for the road user, some of the road occurs street lights not working which dangerous to road users at night if using this kind of road. This project is also able to reduce the cost for the company of the electricity utility road like PLUS MALAYSIA BERHAD because able to produce electricity on their own so there is no more cost of electricity to be paid electric company Tenaga Nasional Berhad for basic road utility.
3.0 OBJECTIVE
There are two objectives in order to develop the electro kinetic road ramp which are:
                                              i.            To apply renewable energy by using kinetic energy concept.
ii.            To obtain the desired result of output voltage.

Final Year Project 1 Week 7 & 8

At week 7 & 8, continue research. The research is about circuit inverter and dc booster that will be used in this project.

DC to AC power converter (Inverter)
Since this project target output is able to produce Ac, so it need to be converted from dc to ac. Power inverter, or inverter, is an electrical power converter that changes direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). The converted AC can be at any required voltage and frequency with the use of appropriate transformers, switching, and control circuits. Inverters are commonly used to supply AC power from DC sources such as solar panels or batteries. Inverter is use in this project because the output of an alternator is DC source and need to be converted to Ac source.

DC Booster

DC-to-DC power converter is use in this project since the output of an alternator depends on the vehicle passes on the ramp, so the value output might be is smaller. By using with an output voltage greater than its input voltage means that the input voltage can be boost. DC-to-DC power converter It is a class of switched-mode power supply (SMPS) containing at least two semiconductor switches (a diode and a transistor) and at least one energy storage element, a capacitor, inductor, or the two in combination. Filters made of capacitors (sometimes in combination with inductors) are normally added to the output of the converter to reduce output voltage ripple. Power for the boost converter can come from any suitable DC sources, such as batteries, solar panels, rectifiers and DC generators. A process that changes one DC voltage to a different DC voltage is called DC to DC conversion. A boost converter is sometimes called a step-up converter since it “steps up” the source voltage. Since power (P=IV) must be conserved, the output current is lower than the source current.
